American Baptist leaders to visit refugee camps on Thai border


Khonumthung NewsFebruary 13, 2008.An American Baptist Church delegation arrived in Thailand on February 10 to meet ethnic Karen and Chin groups in camps Mae La and Umpiem on the Thai border.The delegation includes leaders, pastor and other people under the aegis of Burmese refugee task force are scheduled to stay in Thailand from February 10 to 20. Duane Binkley with his wife Marcia jointly leads the ministry group.The major aim is to visit Burmese refugee camps is to gain a better understanding on the refugee-to-resettle ment process and reaffirming the historic ties between American Baptists and the Burmese people, A. Roy Medley, General Secretary of ABCUSA wrote in the blog documenting the travel to refugee camps on Thai border.Through Church World Service's Immigration and Refugee Program, ABCUSA has helped thousands of ethnic Karen and Chin refugees from Burma resettle in the United States. Moreover, ABC also provides over $100,000 annually to Burmese refugees in camps on the Thai border. ABCUSA group is expecting that several thousands refugees will be able to resettle in the United States over the next 2 to 3 years, A. Roy Medley wrote.Following the arrival of Adoniram Judson, American Baptist missionary in Burma in 1813, Baptists have kept growing among ethnic groups particularly Karen, Kachin and Chin in Burma. Though political change in Burma in 1960 made foreign missionaries leave Burma, ABCUSA still has strong ties over 100 years old with the Myanmar Baptist Convention. International Ministries of ABCUSA share over $100,000 annually in resources directly in MBC for education, development, relief and outreach ministry in Burma, according to ABC.
